Ian Adams
Ian Adams is an environmental photographer based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, specializing in natural, rural, historical and garden photography in and around Ohio. Since 1985, more than 6,000 of his color photographs have been published in books, posters, calendars, magazines and other publications. Ian has carried out garden and landscape photography assignments for landscape designers and for Country Gardens, Fine Gardening, Family Circle, Horticulture, Ohio Magazine, Midwest Living and Organic Gardening Magazines.
Ian has produced more than 60 Wild & Scenic Ohio, Ohio Nature and Ohio Places calendars, all published by Browntrout Publishers, and an exhibit-format book, The Ohio Lands, also by Browntrout, was released in 1995. Another book of Ian’s Ohio photographs, Ohio: A Bicentennial Portrait, with text by Stephen Ostrander, was published by Browntrout in November, 2002. The US Postal Service selected one of Ian’s rural Ohio photographs as the image for a new Ohio Bicentennial Postage Stamp, released in March, 2003.
Other published books include Akron: Written on the Hills by Frances McGovern, The Free-Spirited Garden and Midwest Landscape Design by the late Susan McClure, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens with co-photographer Barney Taxel and text by Steve Love, and The Holden Arboretum, with text by Steve Love.More recent books include The Art And Craft Of Garden Photography, for Timber Press, Our Ohio, for Voyageur Press, A Paradise In The City: Cleveland Botanical Garden for Orange Frazer Press, Cuyahoga Valley National Park for Twin Lights Publishers, and The Floridas for Browntrout. Backroads Of Ohio was published by MBI/Voyageur Press in 2006. Our First Family’s Home: The Ohio Governor’s Residence & Heritage Garden (Ohio University Press), and Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG Press)were published in 2008. A Photographer’s Guide To Ohio was released by Ohio University Press in Spring, 2011, followed by A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio – Volume 2, in 2014. Ian’s latest Ohio book, Ohio in Photographs: A Portrait of the Buckeye State, which includes a forward by Ohio Governor John Kasich, was released by Ohio University Press in 2017. Ian is currently working with fellow Ohio photographer Randall Lee Schieber on a new book, A Place of Silence: Ohio’s Cemeteries and Burial Places, for release by Ohio University Press in Fall, 2023.
Each year Ian drives more than 10,000 miles in and around Ohio in search of new images of gardens, natural areas, historic barns and mills, covered bridges, lighthouses, fishing villages, rural scenes, and historic sites for use in book projects, slide programs, and calendars.His digital Epson Ultrachrome K3 inkjet prints, up to 40×60-inches, are included in many private and corporate collections. Several major hospitals have selected Ian’s prints as therapeutic art for use in patients’ rooms and other hospital facilities.
Ian’s state-of-the-art camera and printing equipment include the Nikon D850 and D500, and the Epson Stylus Pro 9900 color inkjet printer. Ian is also an avid iPhone photographer, and his first eBook, iPhone Landscape & Nature Photography, was released in 2018.
