For many photographers, composition and lighting are the most challenging aspects of nature and landscape photography. This will be the theme of “Focus on Fall”, a 1-day workshop on Saturday, October 19, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, at The Holden Arboretum in Lake County, Ohio. I’ve been a Holden member for more than 30 years, and have visited and photographed every corner of this beautiful, 4000-acre area of woodlands and wetlands, rivers and streams, gardens and meadows in northeast Ohio. I was honored to produce the photographs for a book, The Holden Arboretum, with text by Steve Love, published by The University of Akron Press, which celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of The Holden Arboretum in 1931.

We’ll begin the workshop with a classroom session on learning how to “see” photographically, followed by a slide program that will help you to answer compositional questions like:

* How do I pick the best viewpoint for photographing a subject?

* Is a horizontal or vertical format best?

* Where do I place the subject in the picture frame to get the maximum impact?

* Where should the horizon be placed, in scenic photography?

* How can I maximize depth-of-field, in scenics, or minimize it, for close-ups?

* What is “visual energy” in a composition, and how do I control it?

* What should I leave out, when composing a photograph?

* How do I best compose with color?

Great lighting is just as important as an effective composition when photographing landscapes and close-ups. Contrary to what many beginners in photography may think, bright sunshine is usually the worst lighting for expressive landscape and close-up photography. We’ll review the different types of ambient lighting, and discuss the use of flash in outdoor photography.

After the classroom session, we’ll break for lunch and spend the rest of the day visiting some of the best locations at Holden for fall photography. This workshop includes a review/critique session at Holden on Wednesday, October 30, from 7-9 pm, to view your images, provide you with feedback, and discuss tips for fine-tuning and sharing your fall photos using Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and other image editing software.

There are still a few places available at this workshop.  To register, visit the Holden Arboretum’s website at www.holdenarb.org, or call Vonna Vecchio or Joy Totedo at (440)-602-3833.
