The Holden Arboretum is sponsoring an Icicles and Frozen Waterfalls Photo Tour in the Cuyahoga Valley area on Saturday, January 19, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. We’ll meet at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center in Cuyahoga Falls, where Ian Adams, who lives nearby in Cuyahoga Falls, will conduct a 1-hour Powerpoint program on winter photography. If the weather conditions are seasonably cold, the cliffs along the nearby Cuyahoga River Gorge will be draped with the finest display of icicles in the Buckeye State. Mineral deposits color the icicles, which can be more than 30 feet long,  in shades of blue, yellow, orange, and brown. An observation bridge and a new boardwalk at Highbridge Glens Park, next to the Sheraton Suites Hotel, provide easy access to a viewing area with spectacular views of the icicles.

Next, we’ll carpool to Blue Hen Falls and Brandywine Falls, two of the most photogenic waterfalls in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. A short trail provides access to Blue Hen Falls, and a system of boardwalks offers many views of Brandywine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Ohio. We’ll warm up with a late lunch at the Winking Lizard in nearby Peninsula, or bring your own food if you prefer. If time permits, we’ll complete the photo tour with a visit to the Bedford area to photograph Bridal Veil Falls in Bedford Reservation and Big Falls of Tinker’s Creek in Viaduct Park. A handout with tips on photographing icicles and frozen waterfalls will be provided, and Ian Adams will provide one-on-one coaching during the day. We’ll meet at Holden Arboretum on Saturday, February 2, from 2:00 – 4:30 pm, for a review/critique of your photos taken during the photo tour.

We’ve had a very mild winter so far in northeast Ohio, but with luck cold, snowy weather will occur during the next few weeks so we can do the photo tour. If not, we will reschedule it for later in the winter. To register, call Vonna Vecchio at Holden Arboretum at (440)-602-3833 or visit Holden’s website at www.holdenarb.org.

Happy Holidays, and we hope you enjoy many new photo adventures in 2013!
