Lake View Cemetery – 2024 Wall Calendar

In the summer of 2021 I signed a book contract with Ohio University Press to produce a book, tentatively titled This Place of Silence: Ohio’s Cemeteries & Burial Grounds, with fellow Ohio photographer Randall Lee Schieber and writer Robin Smith. During 2021 and 2022 Randall and I each traveled more than 25,000 miles around the Buckeye State, visiting and photographing hundreds of cemeteries in all 88 Ohio counties. Writer and cemetery lover Robin Smith has written an outstanding text to accompany our photographs, and the book is scheduled to be released in Spring/Summer, 2024 by Ohio University Press.

I visited and photographed more than 150 cemeteries in Ohio’s northern 44 counties during this book project, but my favorite is Lake View Cemetery, near University Circle in Cleveland, which was founded in 1869 and is one of the most beautiful and historically significant cemeteries in America. During a spring visit to Lake View Cemetery in 2022 I met with Katharine Goss, Lake View’s President and CEO, who invited me to collaborate on a photography project to produce a wall calendar showcasing the iconic beauty of Lake View Cemetery. We recently completed this project, and the front and back covers of Lake View Cemetery’s 2024 wall calendar are shown above and below.

The cover photograph shows the John Hay memorial at Lake View Cemetery. John Hay was President Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary during the Civil War. Noted sculptor James Earle Fraser designed the memorial, which includes a statue of the Archangel Gabriel guarding the dead.

The open vertical calendar measures 12×24-inches, and each of the monthly photographs fills a 12×12-inch page, including the January, 2024 image, shown above, which features the elaborate Gothic Levi Schofield mausoleum, which was used as the receiving vault for the body of assassinated United States President James A. Garfield while the Garfield Memorial was being constructed nearby.

Signed copies of this deluxe calendar are available from my website for $24, plus $5.95 packing and postage. Here’s a link:
