Name the Place! – The Winner Is…

Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve, Hocking hills, Ohio
Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve, Hocking Hills, Ohio

The winner of our second Name the Place! competition is Leslie Scott, who correctly identified the place shown in the photo as Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve in the Hocking Hills, Ohio. Leslie wins her choice of Browntrout’s 2011 Wild & Scenic Ohio or Ohio Places calendar. The second person to identify the place was Jerry Jelinek, who wins a selection of Ohio postcards. Congratulations to Leslie and Jerry.

The photograph was taken from the West Rim of Conkles Hollow, a narrow gorge with sandstone cliffs that tower up to 200-feet above the floor of the gorge. The cliffs of the East Rim are shown in the background. The 2-mile Rim Trail, which starts from a parking area near Big Pine road, climbs steeply to the top of the cliffs, which offer some of the finest views in the Buckeye State. The Rim Trail skirts the edge of the cliffs to an overlook near a waterfall at the head of the gorge, then continues south along the West Rim and down the hillside to the trailhead. Most of the tall cliffs and great vistas are on the East Rim. There is also a half-mile trail along the bottom of the hollow leading to a headwall and a waterfall, where the trail ends and you must retrace your steps. In icy conditions the Rim Trail is closed because of the danger of falls from the cliffs.

Check back tomorrow for another Name the Place! contest.
