Name the Place! – The Winners are…

Malabar Farm State Park, Richland County, Ohio
Malabar Farm State Park, Richland County, Ohio

The winners of the most recent Name the Place! competition are Mary Ann Kucera and Mary Anne Romito, who correctly identified the place as Malabar Farm State Park in Richland County, Ohio. Due to a “Mary Ann” mix up in emails (my fault!), both win a signed copy of Browntrout’s 2011 Ohio Places calendar. Congratulations!

Malabar Farm was built in 1939 by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, who lived there until his death in 1956. Movie legends Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were married and honeymooned at Malabar Farm in May, 1945. The photograph was taken in the early 1990s and shows the original barn, which was destroyed in a fire on April 4, 1993. A new barn was raised in September 1994 by local Amish craftsmen and volunteers of the Timber Framers Guild of North America. Although adapted for modern building standards, the new barn used the same traditional construction techniques used by the pioneers.

After Louis Bromfield’s death, Malabar Farm was donated to the State of Ohio. Today it operates as Malabar Farm State Park, and showcases many of the innovative farming techniques developed by Bromfield.
