Picture Ohio! – Kingwood Center Gardens, Mansfield

Kingwood Hall Panorama

Kingwood Center Gardens in Mansfield is one of my favorite Ohio public gardens, and this 47-acre garden in Richland County was putting on a fine floral show when I stopped by a couple of days ago. Thousands of tulips, grape hyacinths, daffodils and other spring bulbs were in bloom, together with redbud and several varieties of magnolia.

Crocuses at Kingwood Center Gardens

I was too late for the spectacular display of thousands of crocuses that cover the ground near the parking area at the Park Avenue entrance, shown above, but several of the crabapples were flowering, as shown in the photo below.

Kingwood Center Gardens, located two miles west of downtown Mansfield, is the former estate of industrialist Charles Kelley King, the President of the Ohio Brass Company. In the midst of the 47-acre property stands Kingwood Hall, a French Provincial style residence designed by Clarence Mack and built in 1926. After Charles King died in 1952, a private trust was established from his fortune to create a public garden, which opened in 1953.

On April 3, 2019 Kingwood Center Gardens broke ground on the Garden Gateway Project, which will include a new, 14,000-square-foot visitors’ center with a cafe, plant and gift shops, an exhibit gallery, staff offices, and an event center, funded by a three year capital campaign which so far has raised over $9 million. The new visitors’ center is scheduled to open in the summer of 2020.

In addition to the horticultural attractions, visitors to Kingwood Center Gardens are often serenaded by the peacocks that stroll the grounds, and a variety of waterfowl can be seen at the ornamental pond.

Kingwood Center Gardens is located at 50 North Trimble Road, Mansfield, Ohio 44906, and is open from April to October, 10 am to 7 pm. The entrance fee is $5, and children 12 and under are free. For more information call (419)-522-0211 or visit the Kingwood Center Gardens website:
