Winter Photography Workshop – February 5, 2022 – The Holden Arboretum

Snowfall, Little Mountain, The Holden Arboretum

Holden Forests & Gardens has invited me to conduct a winter photography workshop in early 2022 at The Holden Arboretum. In past years, our destination for the afternoon photo shoot has been Stebbins Gulch, which features icicles and frozen waterfalls in cold winters. Sadly, Stebbins Gulch and its surrounding forests were badly damaged by a storm earlier in 2021, and the many trees toppled by the storm have created hazardous conditions for hiking. As a result, Stebbins Gulch is closed to visitors until the downed trees and other trail debris have been removed from the area. Instead, we will visit Holden’s Little Mountain, which features old growth white pines and hemlocks, sandstone cliffs and deep crevices, ferns and pristine winter landscapes for photography.

The workshop begins at 9:00 am with a morning slide program on winter photography at Holden’s Visitor Center. We’ll cover winterizing your digital camera equipment, the best smartphone and digital camera settings for winter photography, and specific tips for finding, lighting and composing great photographs of icicles, ice patterns, snowy vistas, rural scenes and wildlife in winter at the best locations in Ohio.

After the slide program, we’ll carpool a few miles to Holden Arboretum’s Little Mountain, which features old growth hemlocks and white pines, rugged sandstone cliffs, deep crevices, and ferns. We will photograph this pristine winter landscape for a couple of hours, then  return to Holden’s Visitor Center to socialize and enjoy a hot drink.

We will reconvene, via Zoom, on Saturday, February 12, from 1-4 pm, to share and critique a selection of participant’s photos and learn some techniques for fine-tuning and sharing your winter photographs using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
