Winter Photography Workshop, Holden Forests & Gardens – February 5, 2022

Icicles, Cuyahoga Falls Gorge, Ohio

Hundreds of icicles line the overhanging cliffs of the Cuyahoga River Gorge in downtown Cuyahoga Falls in the photo shown above, Finding and photographing icicles is one of the topics we will be covering in my one-day Winter Photography Workshop at The Holden Arboretum on February 5, 2022.

Brandywine Falls, Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Ohio has many scenic waterfalls, which can be especially attractive for photography in winter when they are transformed into partially frozen cascades framed by snow and ice. During our morning classroom session at the workshop, I’ll share some of the best locations for waterfall photography in the Buckeye State, as well as tips for creating better winter waterfall photos.

Sunrise over Lake Erie near the Marblehead Lighthouse, Ohio

It was a frigid morning when I carefully ventured out on the ice bordering Lake Erie near the Marblehead Lighthouse in northwest Ohio to capture sunrise in late winter. I wore several layers of warm clothing, and Yaktrax traction cleats on my hiking boots to ensure a good grip on the slippery sheets of ice. I’ll share some of my favorite Lake Erie ice photos during the morning workshop session.

Amish Farm Near Charm, Holmes County, Ohio

I used the photo above of an Amish Farm, transformed by a fresh winter snowfall, as my Christmas card image in December, 2021. Holmes County, Ohio has the world’s largest population of Amish, and the narrow, scenic country roads are empty of the throngs of tourists that visit Ohio’s Amish country during the warmer months.

Tulip Trees and Hemlocks, Ritchie Ledges, Cuyahoga Valley National Park

A fresh snowfall drapes a stately group of tulip trees and hemlocks at Ritchie Ledges in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. At the workshop, I’ll share information on winter tree photography, as well as a few winter poems written by Robert Frost, the only person to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry.

Ringed-billed Gulls, Shreve Lake, Wayne County, Ohio

A Ring-billed Gull swallows a shad on the ice at Shreve Lake in Wayne County. I’ll share some tips on winter wildlife photography during the morning classroom session at the workshop, which still has one or two places available. For more information, visit Holden’s website
